Eagle comic issues

Classic British 1950's comic featuring Dan Dare and the Mekon.   The glossy full colour artwork is second to none and puts the most other British comics from the 1960's, 1970's, 1980's and 1990's to shame.

Loads of how to sports features including football, tennis, boxing, judo, jiu-jitsu, etc.

Eagle is in large format newspaper size.  From vol 2 issue 39 they they are 1 inch shorter.

The 1950's and 1960's adverts for toyes, chocolates, etc, really add to this comic.

Volume 9 issues also have The Happy Warrior life of Winston Church story serialised on the rear covers.

Volume 18 and 19 has loads of issues Legends in their Lifetime front covers with famious people (at the time) such as Joe Lewis the box, and then historical figures such as Lawence of Arabia.

General comic range checking notes

All the early issues don't have any staples, so all the pages are loose.  From early volume 9, they start to get the spine sewn with cotton, which gives them ragged edges, then then give up on that and go back to loose pages.

Always flip through checking the page numbers to make sure that pages haven't been removed.  As you do this, then you can look for coupons cutout or puzzles/quizes (early volumes have competition corner on page 11) filled in.  Most issues have a crossword first half.  This is fun with a comic of this age as you can see original adverts and fill in features on how to box, etc.  Early issues only have 16 pages, with the odd 20 page bumper issue, so it doesn't take long.

Also watch out for issues that have had their edges trimmed. Lots of the early ones have scrappy edges and you sometime find smaller, neater issues, which stick out.  The early ones have approximately 3/4 inch white boarder space top and bottom edges, and approximately 1/2 inch left and right edges.  Just a note.  Vol 1 issue 1 to Vol 2 issue 38 are a full inch taller than issue after that.

Price guide notes

Volume 1 issues 1 to 20 seem to be the most expensive.  Obviously No 1 with the first appearance of Dan Dare is the most sort after key issue.

After that, the price of issues generally fall to a consistant level as they are still common and were produced in vast numbers.  Expect to pay £4-10 for most issues in nice complete condition.

The first issues in each volume and Christmas cover issues are always more expensive.  Collecting Christmas covers is still popular so the demand for these issues increases the price.
